Get ready to spread kindness! The 29th annual Violence Awareness & Random Acts of Kindness (VARAK) Week is happening from March 3 to 9, bringing a much-needed boost of positivity to the Quinte region. This annual initiative is all about counteracting negativity with small (and big) acts of kindness that remind us of the power of community and compassion.
“Kindness is contagious—please pass it on!” says Chris Macdonald, co-chair of the VARAK committee. He also notes that after a long, cold winter, this week of uplifting gestures is the perfect way to warm hearts across Belleville, Quinte West, and beyond.
What’s Happening This Year?
VARAK Week isn’t just about random acts—it’s also about celebrating those who make a difference. Local elementary school students will showcase their creativity through colouring and poster contests, with winning entries displayed at Quinte Mall. Meanwhile, high school students have a chance to be recognized as their school’s Kindness Citizen, with an overall winner receiving a laptop and printer, courtesy of Quinte Mall and the VARAK Program. Two additional students will also receive bursaries in recognition of their kindness.

🕯 Monday, March 3 – Community Candlelight Vigil
Join in a moment of reflection by lighting a candle at 7:00 p.m. to honour victims of violence.
💙 Tuesday, March 4 – Kindness When You Least Expect It!
Keep an eye out for kindness crews spreading unexpected acts of generosity across the region—including in Belleville, Trenton, Madoc, Wellington, Bloomfield, Picton, Consecon, Frankford, and Stirling. Special thanks to Lactalis Canada (Black Diamond) and Hawkins Cheezies for their donations to this initiative.
🎀 Wednesday, March 5 – Blue Ribbon of Hope Day
Wear your blue ribbon or anything blue to symbolize kindness and hope.
📞 Thursday, March 6 – Thankful Thursday
Take a moment to text, message, or call someone who has positively impacted your life. A small “thank you” can go a long way!
💌 Friday, March 7 – Friendly Friday
Brighten someone’s day with a kind note, flowers, a card, or a heartfelt message. Whether it’s a neighbour, a friend, or a co-worker, let them know they’re appreciated.
🏆 Saturday, March 8 – Kindness Citizen of the Year Award
Know someone who embodies kindness? Nominate them for the Kindness Citizen of the Year Award! Submit a ballot at Quinte Mall Guest Services, email qteservice@primarisreit.com, or fill out an online form at www.varak.ca by Friday, March 7. The winner’s name will be featured on digital signs throughout Quinte Mall and will receive special recognition for their kindness.
