What’s Next for Memorial Marketplace? Here’s What You Had to Say

The transformation of Memorial Marketplace has been one of the most exciting developments in downtown Belleville, and as it enters its next phase, the big question is—what’s next? Last week, we turned to you, our readers, to weigh in on what you’d love to see in this evolving community hub. From unique local shops to lively gathering spaces, the responses poured in by the hundreds.

We’re breaking down some the top suggestions, the most creative ideas, and the trends that stood out. Here’s what you had to say!

Bring on the Baked Goods & Big Cones 🍦

“A good old-fashioned bakery. Look at Mariposa Market in Orillia to see what I mean. Reid’s should open an ice cream parlour with big cones at a great price and their $1 milkshake. Or Kawartha Dairy if Reid’s won’t. See ‘What’s Your Scoop’ on Frankfurt Road. A really good old-fashioned hot dog stand, like Costco. For retail, you need to bring in bus tours and have hostess-type gifts in the $20-30 price range—paper napkins, candles, and other consumables.”

Sweet treats, affordable eats, and some unique retail therapy? Sounds like a winning combo!

A Green Grocer in the Heart of the City 🥬

“I would love to see a green grocer in the downtown area. Other than the large supermarkets and the farmer’s market, there is no alternative to purchasing groceries in this area.”

Having a year-round place to grab fresh, local produce would be a game-changer for downtown residents and those looking to support local growers outside of the seasonal farmer’s market.

Bike Security for a Greener Downtown 🚲

“Indoor bicycle parking. Or at least secure outdoor parking spaces (think appropriate-sized metal containers/lockers). Unfortunately, bikes get stolen far too often in Belleville (and other cities too), and having a spot to secure your bike (and possible trailer) indoors would be fantastic. This move would facilitate commuting and shopping by bicycle, not to mention encourage people to ride their bikes more often. It’s evident that providing the infrastructure for a bicycle lifestyle is all that is required to transition a community’s thoughts and, therefore, actions. This initiative would also help decrease carbon emissions and improve the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of those who participate.”

A more bike-friendly downtown? Yes, please! Secure parking could encourage more people to cycle instead of drive—better for the planet and the community.

Artisan Alley & Indoor Farmers’ Market 🎨

“Artisan shops with unique crafts, food kiosks offering vegetarian and specialty items, and bring the farmer’s market indoors for all-year fresh produce.”

An indoor marketplace could provide a permanent home for local artisans and food vendors, making fresh, locally made goods more accessible year-round.

A Boutique Fitness Studio for Women 💪

“I’d love to see a boutique fitness studio designed specifically for women, offering specialized classes like yoga, Pilates, or strength training in a supportive and welcoming space. Something with a focus on community and empowerment rather than just another big gym!”

With a growing interest in boutique fitness, a studio tailored for women could provide a unique wellness destination in the downtown core.

Who knows what some of the new and existing entrepreneurs have cooking up in the idea pot? What we do know is this exciting development downtown Belleville is going to be a huge improvement to the area.
